When you are looking for a dog and only wanting a companion and living with a male or female makes no difference if the dog is going to be fixed.  Just keep this in mind...  A whole Male will want to roam around if he is giving the opportunity. He will most likely get into fights with other male dogs or get hit by a car. A unspayed female will go through heat twice a year and the female in heat goes thru some changes to attract male dogs. During the heat cycle  she will put an odorous fluid that will attract males.   If you are only wanting a dog for a companion then please spay or neuter.  You can fix the dog between as yearly as 8 weeks.. but most vets tend to have problems with this age.  The best time to spay or neuter is at 6th and 8th months old.

A dog(either male or female) can reach sexual maturity at the age of 6 months or 1 years old. You should have your female spayed before her first heat cycle.. this will help prevent cancers, diseases and unwanted puppies.  The male should be done around the same time and this will relieve some of the problems with leg lift, mounting, and roaming the neighborhood looking for females that are in heat. Neutering or spaying doesn't prevent a puppy growing up to be a fine watchdog.

The dog want mark his territory on your walls, chairs and any other place that isn't unacceptable.

The female wont leave you wonderful red stains in your light colored carpet.

What is the word Spay mean?  Its called Ovariohysterectomy and that means that the uterus and ovaries are taken out to prevent breeding and unwanted pregnancies.

What is Castration?  Its when the removal of the testes and making him infertile and modifying or eliminating many typically male behavior.

What is Vasectomy? Its when the testicular tubules are severed and is a less drastic but serves the same purpose as castration.
